African & Afrikaans-Accented English Transcription Specialists

About the role

We're building high-quality training and evaluation datasets for next-generation AI voice agents, and we need sharp-eared language specialists who can accurately transcribe conversations spoken in African-accented and Afrikaans-accented English. Your work will directly shape how well AI systems understand and respond to diverse global accents, making voice AI more inclusive and reliable.

This is a flexible, remote, project-based opportunity ideal for detail-oriented linguists, transcriptionists, or bilingual professionals who understand the nuances of regional English accents across Africa.

We are hiring for two accent groups under this single posting — apply once, and a short screening question will confirm which group you're best suited for:

• **African-accented English** (e.g. Nigerian, Kenyan, Ghanaian, Tanzanian, South African)
• **Afrikaans-accented English** (requires conversational or fluent Afrikaans)

What you'll do

• Listen to recorded conversations and produce accurate, timestamped transcriptions
• Capture accent-specific speech patterns, colloquialisms, and code-switching accurately
• Flag unclear audio, overlapping speech, or ambiguous phrasing for review
• Follow detailed style guides and formatting conventions consistently
• Complete quality checks on your own transcriptions before submission
• Provide feedback on edge cases to help refine transcription guidelines
• Meet agreed turnaround times on batches of audio content

Requirements

• Native or near-native fluency in English with strong familiarity with African or Afrikaans-accented speech
• For the Afrikaans track: conversational-to-fluent Afrikaans proficiency
• Excellent listening comprehension and attention to detail
• Strong written English with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation
• Reliable internet connection and a quiet working environment
• Comfortable using transcription or annotation tools (training provided)
• Prior transcription, captioning, or linguistic annotation experience is a plus

**Nice to have:**

• Experience with speech data annotation for AI/ML projects
• Familiarity with multiple African English dialects or regional variants
• Background in linguistics, language teaching, or translation

Compensation

This is a flexible, remote, short-term engagement paid hourly based on completed work. Rates are competitive and commensurate with accuracy and turnaround speed.
